These cysts originate from the nephrons inside the kidney. After separating from the nephorns, they continue growing on the surface of the kidney. The cysts cause the affected kidney to enlarge. In some cases, the kidney of a person with polycystic kidney disease weighs between 20 and 30 pounds.Just as in the case of simple kidney cysts, a person with polycystic kidney disease experiences a throbbing mild to severe pain in the sides and the back. Presence of multiple cysts in the kidneys not only leads to kidney malfunction but it can even affect other organs. Presence of cysts in the liver and pancreas, abnormalities in the heart valve, diverticulosis or formation of small pouches in the colon and aneurysms are sometimes associated with polycystic kidney disease.
