Home Remedies For Itchy Dry Scalp


In adults itchy scalp is a common condition that occurs from time to time. It might be due to a skin condition or might come on due to temporary reasons. The discomfort that an itchy scalp provides may also herald other problems. Hair problems have increased manifold over the last few decades owing to hectic, fast paced lifestyles, pollutants and little time for hair care. One of the most common problems ailing people world-wide is is a dry, itchy and flaky scalp.

Scalp problems are so common that we tend to ignore them. Extremely Dry hair or excessive oil production can cause your scalp to itch and become dry and flaky. Using over the counter shampoos seen in tv commercials rarely give long term results and scratching and rubbing only compounds the problem.

Itchy Scalp Symptoms

The symptoms of such a condition are few:

  • Persistent urge to itch the scalp
  • Flaky skin or tiny white particles coming off the scalp
  • Hair or scalp feels dry and flaky
  • The skin could be punctured and a bruise or an open wound could form due to the itchiness or the infection formed on the scalp

Reasons For Itchy Scalp

People living in cold, wintry climate are susceptible to dry, brittle hair and a harsh scalp. On the other extreme, an extremely humid and hot climate brings on a clingy dryness which is an ideal breeding ground for dandruff. Certain foods can bring on an allergy and may cause irritation in the scalp.

Certain hair products like serums, shampoos and spray are known to bring on eczema like rashes coupled with redness on the scalp, neck area and even the face. There is acute dryness in the scalp and the superficial skin layers start to peel off.

Remedies For Flaky And Dry Scalp

One of the sure shot solutions to tackle an itchy scalp is to stay away from harsh chemicals, serums, mousses and shampoos.  Excessive use of hair sprays, hair treatments like ironing and hair colour are notorious for causing an itchy, dry and scaly scalp.

Apple Cider Vinegar

It is known that apple cider vinegar is a powerful anti inflammatory substance that kills off viruses and yeast.

  • A mixture of apple cider vinegar and water would make a great home remedy for the itchy scalp
  • The scalp needs to be rinsed with clear water
  • The mixture should then be added with soft cotton

Regular Scalp Massages

These days a lot of salons offer hair spas with the use of natural products. This enhances blood circulation to the scalp and prevents it from drying out. Make sure you oil your hair with hot almond hair oil or any other oil that is suitable to your hair type. This must be done at least once or twice a week.When you step out, be sure to don a sun hat or carry an umbrella. It will go a long way in ensuring hair health.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice will help treat an itchy and dry scalp because of its antiseptic properties. It is particularly useful when dealing with dandruff. You can simply apply fresh lemon juice thoroughly on the scalp. Leave it on for five minutes and then shampoo your hair. If you do not have dandruff, dilute the lemon juice in water.

Shea Butter

This thick, viscous, buttery fluid is extracted from the shea tree commonly found in Africa. It soothes, smoothens the skin and provides hydration to the affected areas. It is commonly used in conditioners to provide relief to people suffering from dry hair or an itchy scalp. It has a soothing, moisturizing and protecting effect.  Shea butter also helps restore blood circulation in the capillaries found on the scalp.

Shampooing The Right Way

Using too much or too little shampoo depletes your scalp of moisture or allows dirt and grime to settle giving rise to dandruff and a host of other hair conditions. Ensure that your rinse off the shampoo properly. Any residues will leave behind flakes which will then fall off.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil creates a barrier that helps keep skin moisturized and hence it is an effective way to treat an itchy scalp.

Avoid Direct And High Temperature Heat

Use of excessive blow driers on hair and very hot water is not recommended as this again causes the scalp and hair to fry out leading to itchiness and flaking.

Sometimes a dry scalp has some more serious underlying causes like an eczema or psoriasis. So do book an appointment with your dermatologist and get yourself checked for any other skin related problem.

Herbal Shampoos

Herbal shampoos contain ingredients having organic or natural origins like teat tree oil, shea butter and Urea. Use of shampoos containing these ingredients is known to tackle a host of hair problems like dry, limp and frizzy hair.
