A callus, also known as callosity, is a toughened skin area that has become thick and hard due to repeated friction, pressure or other irritation.
Usually, calluses develop on the feet, especially on the bottoms of the feet and the underside of the big toe. Calluses can also develop on the hands, fingers or anywhere on the body where there is repeated friction.
As a response to such irritations, thickened masses of dead skin cells are formed on the skin, and these masses are termed as calluses.
To get relief from such uncomfortable situations, people may tend to adopt measures like cutting of the calluses with a blade or even shaving them off. But if not done under professional care, these remedial measures will lead to worsening of the condition, and one may even contract infections.
Effective Home Remedies for Callus
Epsom Salt Soak
One of the easiest ways to treat a foot callus is to soak the affected area in warm water mixed with Epsom salt. It will help soften the area, thereby making it easier to scrub the hard skin away and keep your feet free from infection.
The Primary Step
Before starting off with callus treatment, it is imperative that you clean the affected areas thoroughly, as the presence of dirt and grime can worsen the condition and can also render the treatment to be ineffective. You can do the cleansing process by washing the callus and the areas surrounding it by using a medicated soap and warm water.
It is necessary that you perform the cleaning up process 3 to 4 times a day, even if you are not resorting to any specific methods of callus treatment. After cleaning, do see to it that you dry the area thoroughly with a clean towel so that no trace of moisture remains.
Bread and Vinegar
Another very effective remedy for calluses on the feet is the paste of bread and distilled vinegar. This paste helps soften the callused skin as well as reduce the risk of infection.
The Homemade Pedicure
In order to get rid of calluses, you can try out a pedicure at your home on a daily basis. This pedicure is different and far simpler from the ones you usually receive at a salon and is specifically aimed at callus removal.
To perform the pedicure, you should start off by soaking your feet in a tub of warm water, to which 3 to 4 tablespoons of baking soda has been added. You can also use Epsom salts for this purpose. The action of these salts will help in dissolving the dead skin cells in the feet , thereby leading to the destruction of the calluses.
Immerse your feet in water for a period of approximately 30 minutes, during which the calluses will have softened. After the stipulated time period, use a pumice stone and rub off the outer layers of the calluses, for about 10 minutes. After using the pumice stone, dry your skin thoroughly and sprinkle corn starch over the calluses. Take care not to rub the callus too hard, lest it starts bleeding. This will ensure that no moisture remains on the skin and the calluses are free from the chance of contracting infections.
After performing the callus treatment, you should wear socks so as to keep your feet free of dust particles. The socks should be clean, loose and made out of cotton.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is acidic in nature. This acidic property of ACV helps you a lot in softening the skin that can be then removed to get rid of calluses. Also, vinegar balances the pH levels and thus its good for those too who have sweaty feet. You can even use plain vinegar if ACV is not in your instant reach.
Baking Soda to Get Rid of Calluses
Baking soda has been widely accepted as a good natural exfoliator. The fine crystals in baking slough off the dead cells and make your skin soft. Because the skin of calluses is very thick and hard, you might need to use baking soda for a number of times to remove calluses from your feet.
