Vertigo is not a disease but a peculiar physical condition that is noticed in some individuals. The person who experiences vertigo feels dizzy or experiences a spinning or whirling sensation. He or she may also feel unsteady and lightheaded. But just feeling dizzy does not mean that the person has vertigo.

The reason behind these feelings is a disorder in the body equilibrium caused by various factors ranging from free floating calcium carbonate in the semicircular canals of the ear to high or low blood pressure, head injuries or even dehydration. The severity of the condition can range from simple bouts of dizziness to situations that can change the life pattern of a person.

There are many medical treatments available for vertigo and your doctor can take care of them. But there are various home remedies available for vertigo too and you can actually take care of yourself if you have milder forms of vertigo.

Lifestyle Changes

If you have been diagnosed with vertigo then the first thing that you should do is to make a change in the lifestyle you follow. Diet is important. So it should not only be nutritious, it will have to be well balanced. Set aside foods containing caffeine.

Do not take food which are very sweet or salty and also stay away from iced tea. Reduce stress, sleep at regular hours and do regular exercises. Water is very important for vertigo. You should sprinkle some cold water on face whenever you feel dizzy and also drink enough water. As a daily routine, take at least 8 to 10 glasses of water.

Focusing, Massage and Posture

Since imbalance is one of the causes of vertigo the brain should be trained to regain balance. Whenever you feel like you are feeling lightheaded or getting dizzy focus on a big stationary object, say a bookcase, and keep looking at it for some time.This will help the brain to achieve balance and that will clam your dizziness.

Moreover, sometimes the diagonal muscle in the frontal portion of the neck can stiffen due to various factors and induce vertigo. Massaging this portion can relive the pressure and give relief. Getting the right posture is also a major factor for alleviation of vertigo.

When sleeping or lying down, do not put the head in line with the body or lower. Always use a pillow to keep the head positioned higher. If you have recurrent bouts of vertigo then make sure that you turn your head slowly and make this a practice. Do not have jerky movements when looking up or down.

Vitamin C and Protein

These two are very important to cope with vertigo. Take fruits like oranges, strawberry, guava and other fruits rich in vitamin C. Soaking amla powder and coriander in water overnight and drinking the extract with sugar can be helpful. A paste of a combination of some almonds, watermelon seeds or pumpkin seeds, wheat and poppy seeds mixed with a few fried cloves and taken with milk is said to be one of the good natural remedies for vertigo.
