Ringworm is a common fungal infection of the skin and is not due to a worm. The medical term for ringworm is tinea. The condition is further named for the site of the body where the infection occurs.

Ringworm is a skin condition that is commonly seen in both humans as well as animals. The cause of the skin disease is a fungus that is actually a low form of a type of vegetable plant. The disease is not life threatening but can be rather annoying because of the symptoms associated with it.

Symptoms Of Ringworms

The most common symptom of ringworms is appearance of round or oval red patches all over the skin. The patches are ring-like in appearance with a clean centre, hence the name. Scratching the itchy and infected patches is the main cause for spreading of infection to the unaffected parts of the body.

The condition needs to be treated in time otherwise it keeps making up an appearance time and again. Also, the ringworm infection spreads from person to person or from animals to humans via skin contact. Hence, immediate treatment of ringworms is called for.

  • From person to person by touching a person who has the infection.
  • From touching items which have been in contact with an infected person. For example, towels, clothes, bed linen or chairs which have been used by somebody who has ringworm.
  • From animals. Some animals such as dogs, cats, guinea pigs and cattle have fungal infections on their skin. They can pass on the infection, especially to children.
  • Farm animals can also be a source. Touching a farm gate where infected animals pass through may be enough to infect your skin.

Home Remedies For Ringworm


Garlic can also be used topically as a natural treatment for ringworm, which makes it the first in our list of home remedies for ringworm. It’s the naturally occurring chemical compounds allicin and ajoene that are found in garlic whose antibacterial and anti-fungal properties make it a powerhouse against skin infections like ringworm.


Rubbing slices of raw papaya on infected skin is a very simple yet effective way of taking care of the infection. Take a raw papaya and slice it into medium-sized cubes.

Rub the cubes directly over the circular patches to get relief from itching and burning. You can also use paste made from dried papaya seeds to cure the infection. Do spot applications of the paste of papaya seeds to treat the fungal infection.

Jojoba Oil and Lavender Oil

This is the safest and soothing remedy to treat the ring worms. It is used to heal the infection in babies. All you need to do is mix a drop of lavender oil in a teaspoon of jojoba oil. Apply this mixture with a cotton ball on the affected area. Leave it on the ring worm.

Mustard Seeds

Prepare a paste of 50 grams mustard seeds with appropriate quantity of water. The mustard seeds paste should be of a spreadable consistency and should not run. Apply a thin layer of the paste on the affected areas and allow drying. Re-apply the paste as and when required.

Butea Seeds

Butea is herb that has been used extensively since ancient times to treat ringworm infection. Make a fine powder of the butea seeds and mix with a little lemon juice to form a paste of spreadable consistency.

Apply a thin layer of the paste over the round patches. Use the paste thrice a day for best results.

Basil Leaves

Basil leaves are a very effective way of treating ringworm infection. Thoroughly wash and boil about 100gm of basil leaves in ½ liter tap water. Let the infusion cool down and then strain it.

Use the resultant water for cleaning and washing the infected areas of the skin. Do this treatment at least 4-5 times in a day. Basil water will provide you relief from itching as well as take care of the redness of the skin.

Turmeric Powder

Take raw turmeric and ground it to a fine powder form. Mix turmeric powder with rose water to form a paste. Apply the paste on the patches and let it dry. Remove the paste using warm water.

Wait for 20 minutes and then re-apply the paste. Do this at least 4 times during the day to get rid of the itching and redness associated with ringworm infection.

It is also recommended that fresh turmeric powder be consumed orally during ringworm infection. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder in 200ml of warm milk and drink the concoction daily before going to bed.

Almost all the parts of the olive tree have potent health benefits. Olive oil is undoubtedly the best body massage oil, whereas olive leaf is a powerful remedy for ringworm. It has anti-fungal qualities and helps in boosting the body’s immune system.
