Canker sores are gray or white sores surrounded by a red inflamed area. They occur only inside the mouth, on the tongue or the insides of the cheeks, lips or throat. Canker sores are sores that develop in the mouth causing lot of pain and discomfort. In some people the sores are a result of allergic reaction to a particular food and keep recurring as long as the food and its variants are a regular part of the diet.

Canker sores generally appear on the inside flesh of the lips, cheeks and the soft palate and are characterized by tiny bumps that may occur singular or in cluster. Many times the sores are formed as an allergic reaction to food or due to stress.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm is a native of North America and has been used by the locals there for treating various medical problems over the centuries. The bark of the slippery elm tree has mucilage, which is a thick gel-like substance. The mucilage is a common ingredient used in the commercial preparation of lozenges.

These lozenges can be used for treating canker sores as they form a thin film over the mucous membrane to relieve pain and inflammation caused due to the sores.

Baking Soda

Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, helps treat mouth ulcers. It is especially helpful for those caused by acidic foods or drinks as baking soda helps neutralize acid. It will also reduce inflammation and remove germs and bacteria. Be aware that it may cause a burning sensation.


Myrrh is the herbal extract that is derived from the bark of the myrrh tree and is actually a gum resin. This gum resin has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and astringent effects due to which it is popularly used for treating canker sores.

Supplements prepared using myrrh have the same effect on canker sores as do the antibiotics but the herbal supplement is without any side effects. Check with your doctor to know the right dose of myrrh supplements for treating canker sores.

Honey for Canker Sores Pain

If you want to relieve yourself of the pain that accompanies canker sores, you can use honey. Take a little honey on the tip of your finger. Now apply this honey on the ulcers inside your mouth. Do this about 4 times a day. You may initially feel as if your sores are burning when you apply honey on them but after a few seconds only, you’ll be relieved of the pain.

Rock Rose

Rock rose is also known as forstwort and is easily recognizable given its yellow flowers that open only when the sun is shining bright. The herb is a rich source of tannins that help shrink and dry tissues and stop all forms of bleeding.

They are also known for their anti-inflammatory effects, which is what makes the herb useful for treating canker sores. Prepare mouthwash using rock rose powder and water and use it daily to prevent formation of canker sores.


Licorice is a flowering plant with plenty of medicinal properties that have been used in the treatment of many disorders including canker sores. The herb has a sweet taste and its juices are sooth irritated mucus membranes found within the cavity of the mouth.

It forms a thin layer over the mucus membranes thus protecting it from the acid in the saliva and the spices in the food. Prepare mouthwash using licorice powder by adding a teaspoon of the herbal powder in 100 ml of water. Wash your mouth 3-4 times with this herbal mouthwash.


Echinacea has very strong anti-bacterial properties and is also a good stimulant for the immune system. By supporting the immune system, Echinacea helps avoid infections and aids in faster healing and repairing of damaged cells and tissues of the body.

The herb is ideal for treating canker sores as well because of its healing effects. Prepare a mouthwash using the herbal extracts of Echinacea and use the mouthwash 3-4 times during the day. This will treat the sores and also protect your mouth from bacterial infection.
