Arthritis

Arthritis is very common but is not well understood. Actually, “arthritis” is not a single disease; it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease.

Literally, the term arthritis means inflammation of the joint. But generally ‘arthritis’ is used to denote a group of over 100 rheumatic diseases, which leads to inflammation, tautness and pain in the joints.

There are many types of arthritis and some of the common types include osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia.

Arthritis is basically categorized into two forms – acute and chronic. Acute arthritis pain last for a few seconds or a few minutes and is temporary whereas chronic arthritis pain can last for a longer duration like days, months, years and sometimes it accompanies you to your deathbed too.

It is very important to be aware of the early signs of arthritis so that early treatment can be started to get it cured. Some of the important and early signs of arthritis are discussed below in brief.

Inflexibility or stiffness in the joints:

The second sign of arthritis is inflexibility or stiffness in the joints. Stiffness is mainly triggered by inflammation in the lining of the joints, muscle tautness and calcification at the joints.

At times, patients who experience severe stiffness may find it difficult to move their joints. Therefore, if you observe stiffness, you must consult your doctor so that you can avoid complication.

Stable and continuous pain:

The most important early sign of arthritis is the stable and continuous pain. And this pain is usually related to the swelling and inflammation in the joints. The agonizing pain is chiefly caused due to the degenerative and destructive process that occurs in arthritis condition.

The tissues around the joints get inflamed and give rise to pain in case of rheumatoid arthritis. At times, arthritis pain can also be due to the buildup of uric acid crystals and fluids in between the joints.

Redness of skin:

The third early sign of arthritis is redness of skin in the region of the affected joint. When damage is caused to the tissues of the joints, the body’s immune system tries to annihilate or remove the root cause of the damage and thus redness appears in the affected region.

Some other important early signs of arthritis include trouble in moving, warmth or tenderness in and around the region that has been attacked by arthritis and restricted movement in one or more joints.

Low-grade fever:

When accompanied by other symptoms like joint pain and inflammation, a low-grade fever may be an early warning sign that you have RA.

Morning stiffness:

is often an early sign of arthritis. Stiffness that lasts for a few minutes is usually a symptom of a degenerative form of arthritis.

One symptom of rheumatoid arthritis is carpal tunnel syndrome, which is marked by tingling in the wrist and hands.
