Most bites and stings will heal on their own without a visit to a doctor. There are several things you can do to relieve pain and itching and prevent infection from a bite or sting. Whether you are at home or you go outside for work you may come across insect bites or stings. This is something common and unknowingly you can be one of the victims of this.

Hives, facial swelling, redness, swelling in the affected area, abdominal discomfort and breathing problems may be some of the reactions to an insect bite. You may feel the bite or sting and the symptoms of same sometime later. However, bites of mosquitoes and ticks may not cause complications but when the person gets bitten from bees, wasps, fire ants and hornets then this can be problematic. It is therefore vital to have access to several effective home remedies for insect bites.

Effective Home Remedies For Insect Bites

You should first wash off the affected area thoroughly with soap and water. This will clean the affected skin area and thus infection can be avoided.

Ice pack

After washing off the area you can apply cool compress on the affected area with the help of ice or ice pack.

Baking Soda

Applying baking soda paste on the skin bitten by an insect will also help.

Hydrogen Peroxide

You can even apply diluted hydrogen peroxide on the skin affected and keep it for a couple of minutes and then wash off.

Warm Water

Applying merely warm water on the affected area will also provide some temporary relief.

Anti Itch Cream

If you feel that the skin has severe irritation even after the above home remedies then you should consult your doctor as he may prescribe an anti itch cream, calamine lotion or oral medications like antihistamines or antibiotics, depending upon the intensity of the bite and the associated infection.

Essential Oils

Also suggests the use of basil, clove, tea tree and lemon essential oils as topical treatments for insect bites and stings, and as deterrents to bug bites when diffused in a carrier oil and applied to the skin.

But these home remedies will work only when the bite effect is mild or moderate. Some people may have severe reactions post an insect bite and these reactions may include red streaks on the skin, severe fever, bleeding on the bite and severe allergic reactions. It is better to see the doctor immediately because this may otherwise turn out to a dangerous infection which would worsen if time passes.

Since insect bites have tendency to create such complications it is better to adopt preventive measures so as to prevent stings and bites. You should keep your home and office area free from insects and thus timely pest control solutions and use of insect repellents can provide some relief. People having gardens near their home area have higher chances of such bites and stings and thus they should keep windows closed during evenings. Avoid visiting to gardens after the sunset.

Children are highly prone to such bites as they go outside for playing and are unaware of places where they may come across insects. Thus you should make them use skin creams having repellent action so that they can at least keep away from insect bites. However, such repellents do not provide protection from stings. Thus, you should give them instructions about where they should play and where they should not.
