Home Remedies For Fingernail Fungus

Fingernail Fungus

Fingernail fungus is a nagging condition to treat. The fungus affects the nail bed, underneath the nail which makes treatment a little difficult as the nail bed is covered by the hard nails.

If the condition is left untreated, which is almost always the case, the nail fungus spreads to the entire nail leaving it black, brittle and extremely unsightly and can spread to the other nails as well.

There are several home remedies that can put an end to your woes. Natural anti fungal agents can be used for treating fingernail fungus. Though these natural methods might take time to exert its effect on the fingernail fungus, they are absolutely safe and offer complete relief from the condition. Let’s take a look at the remedies.

Home Remedies For Fingernail Fungus

Vinegar Soak

Vinegar is a natural antifungal agent and helps in slowly removing the infection from your fingernails. Take a shallow basin and add two part warm water in it. Add one part vinegar solution to this water and mix well.

Soak your feet into the pan for twenty minutes. Rinse in warm water and pat dry. You may apply some turmeric paste over it to seal the action of vinegar. This can be done every day until the fingernail fungus starts receding and your nails gain back its original and healthy glow.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Before you use hydrogen peroxide solution on the affected nails, make sure that the nails are trimmed adequately so that the peroxide solution can penetrate the nail bed and remove the fungus lying underneath. Take a bowl of hydrogen peroxide solution and dip your nail into it.

Keep it for 30 minutes. You can also use a cotton ball dipped in hydrogen peroxide for application on the affected nail. Do not expect immediate results as the infected nail has to be removed and new nail growth stimulated which takes about three months. Continue treatment every day.

Clorex Bleach

Household bleaches have been known to recede fungus infections effectively. Take a glass of water and empty a cap of Clorox bleach into it. Hold the affected nail into the solution for 10 or 20 minutes. Repeat this procedure every day to discourage the nail fungus growth. Wash your nails after this and dry it well. As bleach can dry and irritate your skin and nails, apply olive or coconut oil after this.

Tea Tree Oil

This anti fungal essential oil has been used for centuries for treating fungal infections effectively. Tea tree oil is very strong and hence must be mixed with another oil like olive oil or water or petroleum jelly before applying on your nails. Cover with a plastic wrap and leave overnight. Wash off in the morning. You may also mix tea tree oil with vinegar and hydrogen peroxide which will make it a more potent remedial measure.

Vicks VapoRub

Application of Vicks VapoRub on the affected nails is known to reduce bacterial action on the nails and also remove the infection gradually. This may not be a treatment option for severe fingernail infections. Apply and massage 2-3 times a day.
