6 Effective Home Remedies For UTI

UTI

UTI or urinary tract infection is a commonly occurring infection of the urinary tract. The infection is more common in women than in men. A recent medical survey showed that nearly eight million women get treated for urinary tract infection every year.

Nearly a million of these women get treated for recurring UTI. The infection is seen in children as well; though the statistics are very low in case of children in comparison to the adults. In urinary tract infection, the bacteria present in the urinary tract (kidneys, ureters and bladder) re-produce at a quick rate leading to infection. These infection causing bacteria enter the body through the opening of urethra.

UTI is not a serious medical condition and is easily treatable. However, any delay in the treatment of the disease can cause severe infection of the kidneys which can be life threatening. If the bladder gets infected with the bacteria it can lead to formation of painful cysts inside the bladder.

Cysts in the bladder are referred to as the condition of cystitis, which is also very common in women. This indicates that women normally do not get treatment for UTI in time which leads to cystitis.

Symptoms Of Urinary Tract Infection

During UTI the person usually suffers from urgent need to pee after every few minutes. However, the sensation is not accompanied with any urine discharge.
Urination leads to extreme burning sensation in the bladder and passing urine can be painful. In some cases UTI is accompanied with chills, high fever, lower back ache and passing blood in urine.

Treatment For Urinary Tract Infection

Although UTI is not a serious disorder it still needs to be treated on time to ensure the infection does not spread to the kidneys and the bladder. UTI is easily treatable at home using natural and safe remedies. These remedies are just as effective as over-the-counter treatments for UTI.

Baking Soda For Treating UTI

Prepare solution of baking soda by combing two teaspoons baking soda with 120ml water. Mix the soda well in the water. Drink at least eight glasses of this solution each day until the infection is completely gone. Do not add sugar or honey to the baking soda water.

Baking soda will neutralize the acid in the urine and also kill the bacteria present in the bladder. The neutralization of urine will relieve the burning sensation during urination.

Cranberry Juice For Treating UTI

Drink 4 cups of fresh cranberry juice every day until the infection is completely cured. You can even add some water to the cranberry juice if it is too strong for your taste. Don’t add sugar or honey though.

Cranberry juice has antibiotic properties which do not encourage the entry of infection causing bacteria into the bladder. Doctors recommend drinking half a cup of cranberry juice every day to avoid urinary tract infection altogether. This method of prevention of UTI is beneficial for men and women who have to share toilet at home or at work place.

Blueberries For Treating UTI

Like cranberry, blueberry too has anti-bacterial properties and is therefore useful in the prevention and treatment of UTI. It can be difficult to find blueberries since they are not readily available.

You can buy them in bulk from any health food store, sun dry them and store them for future use. If you frequently suffer from UTI then buying them in bulk and then storing them is a good option. Blue berries can be added to your breakfast cereals as well as desserts.

Pineapple For Treating UTI

Pineapple is high in bromelain content. Bromelain is an infection fighting enzyme. A medical research showed that sufferers of UTI who were given bromelain in combination with antibiotics became infection free faster than people who were given antibiotics along with a placebo.

People of the first group were completely rid of the infection while those in the second group got treated for recurring UTI. To prevent UTI eat a cup of pineapple slices every day. To treat UTI eat one cup of pineapple slices six times a day and drink pineapple juice four times a day.

Water For Treating UTI

Water is the known remedy for treating various infections. Drinking 10-12 glasses of water during UTI will effectively flush out the bacteria causing the infection. Water will also neutralize the acid environment in the bladder thus reducing the burning sensation felt during urination. Many times UTI is caused due to dehydration in the body.

Not drinking enough water increases the acid content in urine which makes a conducive environment for the bacteria to grow in. UTI can be effectively cured by drinking plenty of water. Water will make you urinate more which will help in quicker removal of the bacteria responsible for the infection.

Application of hot water bottle compresses over the abdomen and the pelvic region will reduce the inflammation of the muscles in these places and bring down the pain.

Vitamin C For Treating UTI

Sufficient doses of Vitamin C in the diet help prevent urinary tract infection. Vitamin C is responsible for flushing out the infectious bacteria by neutralizing the acid in the urine. Medically, UTI is treated with 5,000 mg of Vitamin C supplements daily. This dose is especially given to patients who frequently suffer from UTI.

To get your daily dose of Vitamin C simply drink two glasses of fresh lemon juice. Prepare the juice by squeezing one ripe lemon in 200ml of water. Do not add sugar or honey to the lemon juice. Three glasses of fresh orange juice are also helpful in prevention and treatment of urinary tract infection.

Treatment of urinary tract infection is simple and can be done at home by following the treatments regularly. It normally takes 2-3 days for the infection to go away. However, if the infection isn’t completely gone and you stop the treatment after 3 days, chances are that the infection will recur.

For this reason it is important to continue the treatment of UTI for a period of 5-7 days at least. If the infection does not go away by the end of seven days then it is best to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis of the condition.
